I built a home in 2006. I used sub-contractors to do the work. Can I claim the sales tax for the materials?

Dean N asked:

I played the general contractor role. I purchased some material directly from suppliers. Some was purchased by the sub-contactor. For example, our drywall bill from the install was $10,000.00 material and labor. Can I claim any of the $10,000.00? Thanks!

I am not a tax pro, but I do my own taxes and researched this thoroughly. Unless your bill has itemized sales tax, then you cannot claim it. If you had purchased the materials on your own from a building supply store, then had them charge you for labor only, then you could have claimed the ST from the materials. purchase.
From another perspective, you may be able to claim some deductions if you purchased certain energy efficient materials – new a/c, insulation, etc. It would be worth looking into.
